Later, a central counsel filed a statement in the Kerala High Court that said Sexy Durga was denied exemption “as the ministry was receiving several grievances against its title and took the view that it may affect the law and order as it hurts the religious sentiments, ‘Durga’ being a principal Hindu goddess”.īut Sasidharan’s title is not referring to the goddess. When the movie was selected for the Mumbai Film Festival in October, the I&B ministry refused to give it clearance. No one would then dare to give a name such as Sexy Durga, like the Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan did for his film. There should be a committee with enough subcommittees so that before the next International Film Festival of India (Iffi), every filmmaker in the country would have memorised the list. And they should not forget other deities, gurus, apsaras, Rajput ranis, Maratha rajas…. It could be slightly cumbersome, as 1,000 names are uttered in the Lalitha Sahasranamam, and there are another 1,000 names for Shiva, 1,000 for Vishnu, 1,000 for Lakshmi. The I&B ministry should bring out a directory of what it believes to be hallowed names, and the adjectives that it will allow to be used with them.
